How Much Should a Letter Weigh? 

You probably aren’t going to get much more than a plain vanilla A6 envelope, and that’s okay. You can send a single-ounce letter in a premium First Class envelope for a bit more than the postage. If you’re sending a heavy document you may want to break it up into multiple Priority Mail flat-rate envelopes. The average envelope is just a few ounces if you’re lucky. Regardless, you’ll be a happier camper if you take the time to do it right. Besides, you’ll be able to better appreciate the contents of your mail.

Of course, you can also do it with a kitchen scale. It can be a real pain in the neck, but you’ll be glad you did when you’re finished. Alternatively, you can do it in the comfort of your own home. While you’re at it, you’ll also be able to make it your own with a nice bottle of champagne or two. There is a small stipulation, though, and that’s the weight limit. For the record, a First Class letter is restricted to 3.5 ounces. 

Thankfully, the US Postal Service has a plethora of perks and incentives for its mailers, but that’s not the only reason you should send out your best work.
