The United States Postal Service has announced that it is proposing increases in the price of several postal services. The most notable change will be in the price of First Class letters. The regular first-class stamp will increase by two cents. This is the only change that will impact standard letter rates. The USPS has been unable to balance its budget. It has been estimating a $160 billion shortfall in the coming years. It hopes that its proposed changes will allow it to achieve a $44.5 billion reduction in expenses.
The USPS estimates that its revenue is down 45% from the fiscal year 2011. Last year, the Postal Service sent out more than 13.5 billion letters. The rate of individual letters mailed was a bit lower than in the past. This has been attributed to the widespread use of email and online banking. This shift has put a strain on the post office.
The USPS estimates that the overall inflation rate has increased by 8.6 percent for the 12 months ending in May. These increases have caused prices to rise by 2.4%. The new prices will help to maintain the low cost of letter-mail postage in the industrialized world.
The new price is designed to offset the increased costs of operating the postal system. In addition, the Postal Regulatory Commission has approved the request.
